Boys in the Boat

Writer William Jenkins

Clooney's aquatic Chariots of Fire?

Callum Turner as the protagonist has that Ben Cross vibe.

Callum Turner is fucking hot. I want him in me, quite deeply.

by Anonymousreply 1October 22, 2023 1:14 AM

Agreed. I’m all in for Boys in the Butt.

by Anonymousreply 2October 22, 2023 1:15 AM

Jesus I cried watching the trailer. And Cullum blonde is fucking hot as fuck.

by Anonymousreply 4October 22, 2023 1:18 AM

Big deal… Berkeley won three gold medals as the USA team before/after Washington. Been there, done that.

by Anonymousreply 5October 22, 2023 1:21 AM

Did George choose this material so he could surround himself with young, fit, handsome male actors?

by Anonymousreply 7October 22, 2023 1:29 AM

He wanted to do a sea story to wash away the stank of Ticket to Paradise.

by Anonymousreply 8October 22, 2023 1:33 AM

Did anyone of these actors have a "private audition" with Clooney?

by Anonymousreply 10October 22, 2023 2:02 AM

Armie Hammer tried to get this made starring himself before his downfall.

by Anonymousreply 12October 22, 2023 2:06 AM

The actors are all gorgeous. Didn't Clooney risk priapism in his Director's jodhpurs?

by Anonymousreply 13October 22, 2023 2:15 AM

If the boat is a-rockin', don't come a-knockin'

by Anonymousreply 14October 22, 2023 2:33 AM

The lead's hair is SO obviously bleached blonde.

This looks like a movie about nothing.

by Anonymousreply 15October 22, 2023 2:36 AM

It's actually an interesting story. I very much enjoyed the book.

I'll see this.

by Anonymousreply 16October 22, 2023 3:33 AM

They went to my university.

by Anonymousreply 17October 22, 2023 3:35 AM

You mean that you went to their university….you've never been in a bestselling book.

by Anonymousreply 18October 22, 2023 3:37 AM

Well, at least I graduated college and grad school, unlike some people ^

As in BDF.

by Anonymousreply 20October 22, 2023 4:36 AM

Strange anomaly - I do not see a "reply 7" in this thread. Just jumps directly from 6 to 8.

Yet I am able to see it as a pop-up through the reference to it in reply 9.

George, are you trying to censor revealing content?

by Anonymousreply 22October 22, 2023 8:14 AM

Do you really think that "George" has the ability to censor DL?

I see r7 just fine. You must be set to "delicate flower".

by Anonymousreply 23October 22, 2023 8:21 AM

This looks like the opening scene of a gay porn.

And where are the men of color?

by Anonymousreply 24October 22, 2023 8:46 AM

You have R7 blocked because hit the little orange button of its poster in another thread.

by Anonymousreply 25October 22, 2023 8:50 AM

R25 Thanks, that's remarkable. I don't recall ever having done so consciously. Is it something I can undo?

I should definitely read the settings page.

by Anonymousreply 26October 22, 2023 8:54 AM

Looks formulaic, cliched and like so many inspirational movies based on true stories, false. The trailer pretty much tells the whole story.

by Anonymousreply 27October 22, 2023 9:17 AM

Yes, r6. Been there, done that:

If that's what you did, yes, r26. Hit the icon that looks like 3 lines at the top right of your screen. Scroll to the bottom and hit "ignored". That will show you which posters you have ignored and some of their posts.

There will be an "x" near the top. Click the x and you will have un-ignored them. This function is also known as "ignoredar", because it can help you discover trolls.

It could also be what I said at r23. Multiple posters might have F&F-ed r7. When that happens, their post will vanish, unless you are set, like me, to "asbestos eyeballs". Go to settings to change that.

Or what r29 said while I was writing this.

by Anonymousreply 30October 22, 2023 9:32 AM

The book is s-o-o-o good. If you haven't read it, do so. Those guys from the west coast did indeed beat the elite college rowers from the east coast and and the medals those men won in rowing were as surprising to Hitler and the Nazis as the track & field medals won by Jesse Owens. So much for Germany's "master race".

I took up rowing about two years ago (way too late in life to do anything competitive), it's a great sport, I am now in really good shape, have met some good people, and enjoy the comraderie of trying to work with others to move an "eight" through the water.

What you see in the trailer is "sweep" rowing, which is different than "sculling," which is also pretty amazing.

by Anonymousreply 31October 22, 2023 9:33 AM

R29 R30 So great. I had no idea what I was missing. Apparently a number of posts from a single DL'er, who, as far as I can tell, I had no objection to. Now reversed.

Thank you!

by Anonymousreply 32October 22, 2023 9:41 AM

R31

You do realize Joe Rantz WAS an Aryan of German descent, right?

by Anonymousreply 33October 22, 2023 9:43 AM

The fundamental problem with the Boys in the Boat as a movie is that you’re trying to tell the audience, “Hey, these strapping Northern European types really proved Hitler’s racial theories wrong!”

Hitler would have been upset Germany lost but he wouldn’t have been upset that the team that beat them looked like they did.

by Anonymousreply 34October 22, 2023 9:56 AM

Other than the Jewish teammate none of these people would have upset Hitler.

After watching the trailer, I don't feel like I need to see the movie. It doesn't look bad exactly, but it just looks like the typical sport story tropes: dirt poor hero athlete works his way into the snobby big leagues, hard ass coach with a heart of gold, team faces long odd going up against some Big Baddie and ultimately prevails. There are tears, kissing pretty girls, fights between poor hero & snobs with everyone being friends at the end, mothers crying & men cheering. The end.

Back in the day, Clooney was never what you'd call edgy, but in his old age, he's just become dull dull dull

by Anonymousreply 39October 22, 2023 10:37 AM

The movie missed Venice/Telluride/Toronto/NYFF so it’s most likely a turkey.

by Anonymousreply 40October 22, 2023 10:39 AM

I'll stay home and watch Oxford Blues, again.

I love Chariots of Fire, so if this is even half as good, I'd enjoy it.

Well, no. Do you realize that the term "Aryan" is a pejorative?! Unless one subscribes to Nazism they would not refer to themselves as "Aryan" regardless of their nationality or ethnic background.

by Anonymousreply 50October 23, 2023 4:36 AM

I might see it if it were a Vangelis musical.

So, for those of you poo-pooing and dismissing the story, who think that this "overcoming adversity" story is a trope, a) you haven't read the book and b) haven't seen the PBS documentary from American Experience.

Here's a link... even if you watch the first 9:14, you'll have a greater appreciation of the story.

George must have been on cloud nine directing those barely clad young men. He probably skipped to work each day.

by Anonymousreply 57December 15, 2023 4:54 PM

The casting air mattress.

by Anonymousreply 58December 15, 2023 5:17 PM

R1 He is sexy. I wonder if he inherited the gay gene from his uncle. Any news on his love life?

by Anonymousreply 60December 15, 2023 5:24 PM

A trailer should make you want to see a film, the trailer in the OP's post makes me think I already know the story.

There was a mid 90s rowing movie about the Oxford Cambridge boat race which was apparently very dramatic. Loads of British TV actors in it - Dominic West (fresh from Richard III), Edward Atterton (who dated Salma Hayek) Noah Huntley, Jonathan Cakes, Tom Hollander, Bill Nighy and crazy eyed American Josh Lucas!

by Anonymousreply 61December 15, 2023 5:25 PM

Why did you make two or three different threads on this one film?

by Anonymousreply 62December 15, 2023 5:47 PM

I started rowing two years ago... no, not at some posh English school... but the effort to move that 8 sweep boat is tremendous.

It's incredible to me that I found a sport I love participating in at age 60. I love it and have become an obnoxious convert.

I'd be interested in seeing True Blue and have plans to see Boys in the Boat on 12/27. The book is great... and yes, it's a true story, so if you do a quick google search, you'll learn how it ends. But the story is how those men got to Berlin in 1936 and what they endured along the way.

by Anonymousreply 63December 15, 2023 10:27 PM

R62 Ask that of the other OP's. I started this in October, at the time there were no others.

by Anonymousreply 64December 15, 2023 11:32 PM

Agreed r35 and others. These sound like the types that would be middle aged in the early-60s, complaining about Civil Rights the drama those negros are causing. This is not the group to that should be used to hold up a mirror to Hitler's bullshit, when we know many of them silently accepted Jim Crow (in the North, South, and West) along with other racist social structures in America.

That said, it's a movie about hot white guys getting wet. Sign me up, when it hits the streaming circuit!

Also, r33's photo is damn hot!!! I'm sure he was getting loads of pussy.

by Anonymousreply 65December 15, 2023 11:44 PM

r63 did any of these strapping young men turn trucks for their transatlantic voyage to the Olympics? Cause if not, I'm not sure it's going to be that impressive.

by Anonymousreply 75December 16, 2023 5:48 AM

R71's review talked about montages of muscles rippling. I'm sure Clooney enjoyed those

by Anonymousreply 76December 16, 2023 5:59 AM

Not one whiff of gayness and not one glimpse of ass. But a pretty good movie all in all, telling a true tale I was not familiar with.

But a bit sun-dappled and hazy in that Robert Redford/A River Runs Through It memory-piece way.

by Anonymousreply 77December 16, 2023 6:10 AM

True story; false film

These men weren’t Ivy League types, but bootstrappy strivers such as the budding engineer Joe Rantz (Callum Turner), a struggling student at the University of Washington, left to fend for himself in Seattle’s slums from the age of 14.

They had a matter of months to get in shape: cue many a sun-dappled montage of muscles rippling and teeth clenching, to the strains of an Alexandre Desplat score that tinkles as banally as it soldiers on.

by Anonymousreply 78December 16, 2023 6:53 AM

Seattle slums? Fake already

by Anonymousreply 79December 16, 2023 12:04 PM

Why must Clooney insist he's straight?

He's the faggiest thing to happen in Hollywood since Rock wiped his dick on Roddy McDowall's curtains back in '59.

by Anonymousreply 80December 16, 2023 12:14 PM

once again the term sun-dappled is used to described this film: VARIETY

Drawn from a true story, "The Boys in the Boat" is a painstakingly wholesome, sun-dappled, old-fashioned movie that now fits into a rather ironic slot. These days, there is often a well-pedigreed drama that comes out at the end of the year and serves as an alternative to the awards films. But that's only because it's framed as a traditional "crowd-pleaser," which means that two or three decades ago it would have been an awards film (or, at least, an awards wannabe). Remember "Chariots of Fire?" In 1982, it won the Oscar for best picture. Today, it wouldn't win dog-catcher, and "The Boys in the Boat," a movie that may remind you of "Chariots of Fire," is a kind of WASP daydream of a sports movie. It could almost be a late-'90s Matt Damon movie, only with less interior conflict.

by Anonymousreply 81December 16, 2023 4:56 PM

R76 Clooney (and Gerber) prefer their men to be…still life.

by Anonymousreply 84December 17, 2023 2:29 AM

Based some of the still pix, I have to wonder how many of the rowers have actual rowing experience based on the body and hand positions while rowing - heads turned, wonky or dropped shoulders - no way that's a winning boat. It would be rocking from side-to-side, not slicing through the water.

by Anonymousreply 85December 17, 2023 2:39 AM

[quote]I wish Clooney would focus on production and release of his expose on wrestling coach Jim Jordan.

Someone with clean hands needs to take Gym Jordan down. Unfortunately, arrogant Clooney isn't the one to do it. The audacity of Clooney to even go near the project. HBO did a catch and kill on the project. Not just for political reasons but also because one of Clooney's producing partners on the documentary is billionaire Ron Burkle who was a frequent flyer on Epstein's plane. Ron claimed he was just doing "humanitarian missions" with Epstein. LOL. All these sleazy Hollywood "humanitarians". Then there's the pesky little matter of George crippling that twink on Lake Como. Like I said, the audacity. George has produced several projects with Ron Burkle and he and Rande have done real estate deals in the Hamptons with Ron Burkle. They are long time buddies.

Fun fact: Ron Burkle was close friends with Michael Jackson for decades and even bought Neverland Ranch. He also owns a SoHo House aka high-end brothel.

by Anonymousreply 86December 17, 2023 2:42 AM

I wish that boat was rocking side-to-side with hot guys fucking

by Anonymousreply 87December 17, 2023 2:49 AM

Did it ever come out how Burkle's son died?

by Anonymousreply 88December 17, 2023 7:58 AM

I first saw Callum Turner in the (terrible) Andrew Davies War And Peace. He was a brief amusing part. And then years later in a Netflix romance with Shailene Woodley. Talk about a slow burning career.

by Anonymousreply 89December 17, 2023 8:02 AM

Shailene Woodley? Poor thing, having to put up with her BO

by Anonymousreply 90December 17, 2023 4:15 PM

Callum Turner played Eddie Redmayne's OLDER brother in the Fantastic Beasts movies - he's eight years younger than Redmayne.

by Anonymousreply 91December 18, 2023 2:03 PM

I would have hoped George Clooney would've been a smart enough director to make the lead characters look like they're actually from the Depression era and not from a 2023 Giorgio Armani ad.

r54 I watched "The Only Living Boy in New York" this week based on your suggestion. That movie was a boring stinker. Rich entitled kid gets to become richer and more entitled ro do nothing with his days due to a rather boring twist. His character is the exact type of supported rich kid, slumming it on their own, that I detest. And, the movie wasn't sexy, funny, or all that interesting. Pass on it gents.

The Boys in the Boat is a film made with such a gently dull spirit that you cannot help but wonder if Clooney put himself to sleep during production. Someone get this man a Nespresso.
