My go to comment about my formerly beloved Bjork is that Matthew Barney's pretentious contemporary art persona didn't do her any favors, and she got SUPER pretentious and weird, and in fact seems ruined beyond the ability to snap out of it.

I will say she still produces 30 seconds of sound here and there that are ravishing, particularly with live orchestras.

Björk was always eager to add discord or disharmony in her music (like those scratchy beats in Homogenic). She reminds me of that premise where artists first have to show they have mastered the basics and then deliver some crazy shit, turning whatever the public knows about art on its head in order to be considered credible and innovative. I mean, if she presented her later work right from the start, people would've dismissed her as some dilettante poser who doesn't know what she's doing.
