Bill Withers is dead to me
Christopher Lucas
Searched, couldn't find a thread. What a talent.

A talented, lovely balladeer. Rest in peace, Mr. Withers.

Aww. I loved some of his songs. RIP.

My boyfriend and I slow danced to this song once...good times.

Oh, NO!
I loved him and still play his music all the time. One of my favorites of the whole 1970s.
Especially this great one used so well in Goodbar.

From the April 1999 "Khaki Soul" campaign by GAP.

Stephen stills played lead guitar on his first album and Booker T. produced and played on it as well
I grew up to his songs. RIP
| by Anonymous | reply 12 | April 3, 2020 5:47 PM |
Some used him, 'till he was used up. Like his wish.
RIP Bill you funky badass.
| by Anonymous | reply 13 | April 3, 2020 5:50 PM |
He had four top ten hits. Even Debbie Gibson and Tiffany did that.

[Quote] He had four top ten hits. Even Debbie Gibson and Tiffany did that.
And those Withers hits have endured across the decades with people of all ages. Not so Debbie/Tiffany.
| by Anonymous | reply 16 | April 3, 2020 6:06 PM |
I can’t even remember Tiffany’s or Debbie’s music. I can, however, recall Bill’s.

R.I.P.
There is no soul in pop music anymore and it's a damn shame.
| by Anonymous | reply 18 | April 3, 2020 6:28 PM |
Well, we live in a world now in which evil and stupidity flourish while decency and talent are punished. R.I.P. to a great talent.

Bill was enamored with LA, and wrote one of the best songs about the city. RIP!

A genius. One of the greatest of the all-time greats. RIP Bill.

This is SOOO beautiful.
If you don't like this, you have no soul.

Ain' No Sunshine is a near perfect song.
| by Anonymous | reply 23 | April 3, 2020 8:29 PM |
Aww, that's so sad. "Lovely Day" is my middle sister's favorite song; in fact she was in town last weekend, and put the song on and danced to it twice, saying she and her late dog, Bentley, would dance to it at least once a week.
Me being me, I always remember the gorgeous Denise Nicholas in their divorce petition claiming Bill Withers beat her like a drum on the regular.
But I still love "Ain't No Sunshine."
| by Anonymous | reply 25 | April 3, 2020 9:02 PM |
Use Me is just ❤️. Several years ago, I wrote a gay erotic story that incorporated the song.
| by Anonymous | reply 26 | April 3, 2020 9:06 PM |
I was sad when I was called with the news. When I got a second call asking if I've heard, I just replied I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know I know, I know, I know, I know, I know I know, I know, I know, I know, I know I know, I know, I know, I know, I know I know, I know,

She Wants To (Get on Down), another from Goodbar.
He had an awesome smile. RIP.

My mom used to say that when Bill was married to Denise Nicholas, he beat her up several times. She knew a few folks in the black entertainment world and worked at a long gone beauty salon on South Street in Philadelphia. Black entertainers used to frequent the place when they were in town and were performing. One of Bill Wither’s backup singers had loose lips.

Denise Nicholas was so pretty on "Room 222", as was her male co-star Lloyd Hanes, who died too young. Plus Karen Valentine and Michael Constantine were great, too, and both won Emmys.

sorry, spelling -- Lloyd Haynes
| by Anonymous | reply 33 | April 3, 2020 11:35 PM |
June? That looks more like Anita, if anyone. Cassius was so handsome. Bill not so much.
| by Anonymous | reply 34 | April 3, 2020 11:37 PM |
Lloyd Haynes was one of the few black residents of Coronado, California.

Withers and Nicholas were married for just over a year. Two months before their wedding, she called the police in Tucson to report that she had been assaulted. Charges were never filed, and she later told "Jet" that "Everything that has been reported has been based on hearsay. I haven't given a single interview about it."

Tiffany and Debbie Gibson didn't appear prominently on the soundtrack of a DL favorite film either. Withers is immortalized. I also love that he got a Grammy a decade after his own release of "Lean On Me" when its remake also was a smash.
| by Anonymous | reply 46 | April 4, 2020 1:14 AM |
I never liked Lean On Me.
| by Anonymous | reply 47 | April 4, 2020 1:14 AM |
The Unitarian Universalist church adopted "Lean on Me" as a hymn.

| by Anonymous | reply 49 | April 4, 2020 4:23 AM |
I hate that he will be mostly remembered for "Lean On Me". I absolutely hated that song.
I guess his next biggest-seller was "Just The Two Of Us', but my absolute favorite is "Use Me".
| by Anonymous | reply 50 | April 4, 2020 4:28 AM |
and Lean on Me never liked you
| by Anonymous | reply 51 | April 4, 2020 4:52 AM |
Lean On Me is a piece of shit. Lovely Day and Just the Two Of Us aren't bad, though.
| by Anonymous | reply 52 | April 4, 2020 4:59 AM |
Lean On Me has been so overused for covers, commercials, video scrapbooks, weddings, funerals that the meaning and message of the song has been diluted.
| by Anonymous | reply 53 | April 4, 2020 5:31 PM |
Lean On Me is the ultimate "fraus singing into hairbrushes as microphones" song. It's a giant turd.

No, that's "Hold on" by Wilson Phillips.

The cover for his first album at r42 was real. As he was recording his first album he was working in a factory installing toilets in airplanes. He was 33 when "Ain't No Sunshine" came out.

Barbra is terrible singing this song. It is a blues song, and she’s singing it like a show tune. I’m waiting for her to sing, “Hey, Mr. Arnstein, heeeeeeeerrrrreeeee ayyyyyyyy aaaaaaammmmm!”. Enough.
