Bill Maher vs. Barbie

Writer Andrew Hansen

Just the latest douchebag to denigrate the new Barbie film as being "woke."

Isn't he a little late to the party?

PS. He sucks so much now. Does he even still have an audience?

He saw it with a woman in her 30s, just so you know.

[quote]denigrate the new Barbie film as being "woke."

I didn't see the word "woke" in his screed - for once since it's a word he's been using a lot.

But it seems like he's saying the movie is out of date.

by Anonymousreply 2August 9, 2023 11:00 AM

Will someone get peepaw his pills, a warm blanket, and his remote control, so he'll finally simmer down.

by Anonymousreply 3August 9, 2023 11:39 AM

[quote] I didn't see the word "woke" in his screed -- But it seems like he's saying the movie is out of date.

Yes. Op is a liar and Maher is correct.

by Anonymousreply 4August 9, 2023 12:13 PM

He said it was outdated not woke. And he is right.

by Anonymousreply 5August 9, 2023 12:39 PM

In a recent interview with John Waters he seemed old, walking slowly and creaking into the chair. So I was surprised to learn that he's only 67.

by Anonymousreply 6August 9, 2023 12:48 PM

All the criticism in the world isn’t going to take away its financial success and popularity. Keep crying, right.

by Anonymousreply 9August 9, 2023 1:58 PM

Does EVERY movie have to be judged as culturally significant. Can't a movie just be a movie.

by Anonymousreply 10August 9, 2023 2:03 PM

Bill thinks the movie is out of date because the Playboy Mansion shut down

by Anonymousreply 11August 9, 2023 2:15 PM

"The Mattel board who created her" - did he miss the scenes with the woman who actually created Barbie?

He’s not wrong, but victimization kweens, who are now ruling the modern world via social media with their passive-aggression, need to relive perceived horrors of the past like pigs in slop to fuel their dreams of climbing to power, to abuse it more.

It’s like they’ve created some alternative reality where EVERY woman was beat to death every night when her drunk husband came home, then regenerated each morning to do her chores. It’s such a lie, that neglects the fact that most men were good husbands and fathers who based their entire lives and identities on providing for their families. Most women were very well taken care of and protected.

This reframing of the past that the militant feminists have done is really sick and twisted, and almost all of American mainstream society has bought it. It’s a delusional focus on everything negative concerning men and everything positive concerning women. Majority of American women of the past ran their house behind the scenes. This faux character of all the wilting violets with no autonomy is bullshit.

Some of the worst people I’ve ever met were women, just as bad if not worse then men, but according to society now “all women are infallible angels”.

by Anonymousreply 14August 9, 2023 3:24 PM

Do the same idiots who pay ridiculous sums to see Taylor Shift, also love Barbie?

by Anonymousreply 15August 9, 2023 3:27 PM

[quote]Majority of American women of the past ran their house behind the scenes.

I know! They were such a powerful force with their ability to vote, get a decent job, buy a house or rent an apartment, even open a bank account!

by Anonymousreply 16August 9, 2023 3:43 PM

R16 here we go, a FemZombie.

by Anonymousreply 17August 9, 2023 3:49 PM

R16 yeah, well none of that’s been true for decades and decades. Please move on.

by Anonymousreply 18August 9, 2023 3:50 PM

We should talk about toxic femininity too. Let’s also talk about women who unfairly use sex to get ahead in business.

by Anonymousreply 19August 9, 2023 3:51 PM

Maher is crotchety but correct. OP is too stupid or too dishonest to correctly report Maher's snark.

by Anonymousreply 20August 9, 2023 4:22 PM

Maher is 100 percent right about Barbie.

by Anonymousreply 21August 9, 2023 4:28 PM

Maher is a contrarian and very very clever. What simpletons like OP can't fathom is that several reads can be correct. Maher is usually capable of plausible counter points. That's his entire shtick. OP, you can still love Barbie the movie yet give Maher credit for getting off a few good shots.

by Anonymousreply 22August 9, 2023 4:33 PM

The funniest part of Barbie was when the Kens took over. But the movie doesn't make much sense. The real world is a patriarchy but Barbie ....SPOILER.....choses to live there instead of Barbieland which is a perfect matriarchy. I wouldn't think too much about the plot making sense.

by Anonymousreply 23August 9, 2023 4:34 PM

I thought the point was that she felt she could make a difference in the real world whereas if she stayed in Barbieland she was just stuck in a rut.

R23 a “perfect matriarchy” sounds like a nightmare of passive aggressive behavior and cuntery.

by Anonymousreply 26August 9, 2023 5:36 PM

Aite he doing a lil too much to try to appeal to libertarian cunts. And I’m a libertarian cunt.

by Anonymousreply 27August 9, 2023 5:40 PM

[quote]victimization kweens, who are now ruling the modern world via social media

Yes, Taylor Lorenz is now the undisputed Dictator of America. She's got way more power than Greg Abbott or Ron DeSantis or Kevin McCarthy or Rupert Murdoch or the Sackler family or Clarence Thomas or Harlen Crow or the Uline family.

by Anonymousreply 28August 9, 2023 5:47 PM

Strange..

It is the same poster posting over and over again about how:

1) Maher is correct

2) OP is stupid

Why is this one person so vested in making us believe this??

by Anonymousreply 29August 9, 2023 5:59 PM

"Sure the Flintsones is cute and all but people don't ACTUALLY have dinosaurs as pets!"

by Anonymousreply 30August 9, 2023 6:05 PM

Like Joe Rogan and Alex Jones, Maher exists to stir up animus and give comfort to nubdicked fat white straight dudes, who are in a RAGE that the world doesn't exist to validate their every whim, and/or provide them with every possible need.

by Anonymousreply 31August 9, 2023 6:10 PM

R29 is OP. Strange he drops the first person voice. And it's not the same person posting over and over with pushback. More lies from OP.

by Anonymousreply 32August 9, 2023 6:19 PM

I smell the stench of shit. Which can only mean Defuckto is here.

by Anonymousreply 33August 9, 2023 6:26 PM

[quote][R16] here we go, a FemZombie.

What is a "FemZombie"?

[quote][R16] yeah, well none of that’s been true for decades and decades. Please move on.

The truth hurts.

Guys, I'm going to let you in on a secret. Straight men are never going to admit you to their tribe no matter how hard you hate on women, or Blacks, or Hispanics, or even other gay men. They just aren't. They don't want you. You terrify them. You make them feel the way that they have made women feel forever, and they do not like it. I'm going to save you a ton of heartbreak and psychic distress and without irony tell you: move on.

by Anonymousreply 34August 9, 2023 7:43 PM

It's just so funny how this light, silly movie manages to enrage these tough, stoic, Alpha males.

by Anonymousreply 35August 9, 2023 7:49 PM

R34 yeah, well you fucking whore. The hags are only taking along the femmiest of us on the ride to the top, as subordinate accessories and on a one-by-one token basis. And for the white gays everyone basically has a free pass to hate us now for something or other. So they can all get fucked as far as I’m concerned, and you too, cunt.

by Anonymousreply 36August 9, 2023 7:53 PM

Those who call this woke are missing the point because , intentionally or not, there are ALOT of mixed messages in the film, and, intentionally or not, men end up being at least as sympathetic, if not more, than the women. It almost seems ambivalent about whats better, patriarchy or the Barbie World...to me it is trying to say too many things at the same time, trying to be all about girl power while being self aware enough to know it must inject some pathos in it to not be Tumblr, the movie. Ironically its only good moments are were it's not trying to say anything.

What it for sure af isnt is truly progressive....because what it is TRULY is is a 90 something Mattel commercial given to a feminist director to make it less blatant. The movie will be seen for that in a couple of years time...it wpn't age well.

by Anonymousreply 38August 9, 2023 8:05 PM

Taylor Lorenz is a drama queen reporter who thought it was a good idea to interview Kellyanne Conway's mentally ill, underage daughter. She sucks beyond belief and don't you dare call me a MAGAT although those people hate her too for other reasons. Taylor Swift is the Queen of the Universe combining Barbie's pink adorableness and the lectures on feminism.'

Maher may not be wrong but he's a day late and a dollar short and is bragging about his significantly younger girlfriend. His time has passed.

by Anonymousreply 39August 9, 2023 8:05 PM

R9 no one gives a shit that it made money. Any shit movie that will not stand the test of time can make money.

by Anonymousreply 40August 9, 2023 8:10 PM

Barbie is a dumb fucking movie for Infantilized Yaaass Kweens and their Incest Survivor Fag Hags who will dump them when they get married.

by Anonymousreply 41August 9, 2023 8:10 PM

[quote] I wouldn't think too much about the plot making sense.

That was OP's problem. He settled for the most simplistic read on Barbie (men are patriarchs and this is bad for the world so here's Barbie to save it). The movie is technically well done but its politics are a mess of lies, contradictions and what amounts to circa 1972 feminism as if the world hasn't changed one bit since then.

by Anonymousreply 42August 9, 2023 8:20 PM

^ Well, abortion was illegal in 1972 and is once again illegal in 2023, so there is that.

by Anonymousreply 43August 9, 2023 8:40 PM

Abortion is still legal R43

by Anonymousreply 44August 9, 2023 9:28 PM

It's a film with too many ideas. It's a comedy with a default setting of existentialistic crisis. It's a movie about well-meaning people who can't stop behaving terribly. It's less Barbie than it is Malibu Stepford. Or maybe Rollerblade Runner.

Margot is charming and genuinely touching and Ryan skates along on an unsuspected (by me, anyway) reserve of charisma. But it's not a message movie, unless the message is "life - even at its most superficial- is too complex for a message".

Woke, it ain't.

by Anonymousreply 45August 10, 2023 12:30 AM

So many right-wingers trolling in this thread. Funny to see you guys get so upset over a movie and claim it "doesn't matter" that the movie made a billion dollars even though you all are agonizing over that

by Anonymousreply 46August 10, 2023 12:47 AM

God, could the baiting bots at least TRY for subtlety?

by Anonymousreply 47August 10, 2023 3:07 AM

They long ago gave up any subtlety, r47.

by Anonymousreply 49August 10, 2023 4:48 AM

Barbie is for cocksucking fags who are brainwashed and will eventually Trans themselves.

by Anonymousreply 51August 10, 2023 5:37 AM

Long ago and far away I was a fan. Now, he seems infected with the Fox Mind Virus and indistinguishable from Joe Blowgan and Felon Musky. A very sad decline. He did it to himself.

by Anonymousreply 52August 10, 2023 5:43 AM

R52 maybe he didn’t leave you, maybe you left him.

Did you support Trans’ing 5yos a decade ago?

by Anonymousreply 53August 10, 2023 5:47 AM

^Go away, troll. You have no power here. Your GRU disinformation is pure fascist fiction and your “question” is ridiculous. Try the Daily Stormer, bootlicking Quisling.

by Anonymousreply 54August 10, 2023 8:55 AM

R54 guess r53 hit a nerve

by Anonymousreply 55August 10, 2023 1:26 PM

[quote] choses to live there instead of Barbieland which is a perfect matriarchy

CHOOSES.

by Anonymousreply 56August 10, 2023 2:01 PM

Have any of these morons watched the movie? The real message at the end is that the patriarchy is a construct.

The movie is a little speechy at the end, yes, but the only problem with that is it derails the story a bit.

by Anonymousreply 57August 10, 2023 2:07 PM

R57 what is the matriarchy then?

by Anonymousreply 58August 10, 2023 2:09 PM

"It's all a construct!"

1990 called. It wants it's critical theory back.

[quote]Oreo Barbie and Cracker Barbie

R25 I didn’t realize there was a line of Barbies based on Maher’s ex-girlfriends.

by Anonymousreply 61August 10, 2023 2:37 PM

Most movies these days have this woke vs anti-woke bullshit in them. I was looking forward to watching Tar but the director had to make it about woke vs anti-woke and not simply about a lesbian conductor who has inappropriate relationships with her female students. That would have been interesting. Everything is shit now because of this political division.

by Anonymousreply 62August 10, 2023 2:40 PM

Yes, "Super Mario Brothers" has a whole second act about intersectionality.

by Anonymousreply 63August 10, 2023 2:47 PM

Movies used to do political economy with some slapdash.
