Beverly Michaels

Writer Harper Scott

B movie film noir actress I have seen in East Side West Side, Pickup, and Wicked Woman. Blonde and tall, she always seemed to have a bad attitude but was perversely likeable. Any fans?

I loved how she came into town with one suitcase and two outfits, wrecked a bar/restaurant owning couple's marriage and lured the man to "A-ca-pul-co" with the weirdest intonation ever.

I just saw Pickup which starred and was directed by Hugo Haas. Beverly reminded me of Lange in The Postman Always Rings Twice.

She gives Ava Gardner and Barbara Stanwyck a run for their money in EAST SIDE, WEST SIDE (50), and is freakishly tall and fabulously nasty.

Her son, Christopher Rouse, is an Oscar-winning editor.

Wikipedia says she was 5'9", R4. Hardly freakishly tall.

by Anonymousreply 5December 28, 2018 1:54 PM

She's taller than anyone else in the frame, and has to wear flats.

by Anonymousreply 6December 28, 2018 1:55 PM

Either way, sounds like a cool movie.

by Anonymousreply 7December 28, 2018 1:59 PM

Oh, she was so notable in East Side, West Side in that bar scene.

5'9" seems tall on the screen. Just ask Bea Arthur.

Loved the lantern-jawed lugess. She always showed the audience a good time, as did her pint-sized pal Cleo Moore. IIRC, Wiki says she had a long marriage in some place like Montana.

she had a very modern look and stance in Wicked Woman. it was like.watching a 90s grunge model in a early 60s movie.

by Anonymousreply 11December 28, 2018 2:17 PM

She and Van Heflin have a slug-fight in a car in East Side West Side.

Anyone else ever want to make an hours-long meal of Egan?

by Anonymousreply 18December 28, 2018 11:40 PM

She was no Beverly Aaaaadland.

by Anonymousreply 19December 29, 2018 12:00 AM

"Beverly, you're too big for the gamine look."

by Anonymousreply 21December 29, 2018 1:30 AM

"Pickup"

That would require some heavy lifting.

Wicked Woman is a classic. Horrible theme song sung in an offkey voice, ridiculous plot, and Micheals is an amoral bitch. Great rainy day viewing.

Beverly and Van Heflin in East Side, West Side. He's pretending to be drunk to get her interested.

He slugs her but she has killed Ava Gardner so she deserves it.

by Anonymousreply 27December 29, 2018 6:37 AM

In the movie Gardner has an affair with Stanwyck's husband. A case of life imitating art. So the confrontation scene has a particular resonance.

Whatever else, that movie has four gorgeous voices: Stanwyck, Mason, Gardner, Heflin.

Or art imitating life.^^^

Hugo Haas had a major career directing in central Europe before 1939, and fled to the US just in time. All he did in the US was cheese, including DL Fave Eleanor Parker's MPD flop LIZZIE (57). His brother, composer Pavel Haas, was murdered by the Nazis in 1944.
