The old woman, flouncing the tablecloth in her dining room with the entire outside wall of the building blown out is incredible. After all the hell they'd been through people just got on with their lives with whatever they had left.

You know R1, many of the people of Berlin (and Germany) wanted nothing to do with Hitler & the Nazi regime and knew they were evil. The smiling faces on so many of the people in that video are poignant. They had to be absolutely elated the war was over, even though their city was practically destroyed.

And in case you're looking for color footage, this is what Warsaw looked like BEFORE the Prussians decided to move in:

You know R4, tell that to the rest of the world and millions who died under their watch. It still won't change what Germany did to change to course of history for the worse.

Oh, those POOR GERMAN PEOPLE!!! Look at all the horrible things that the evil Americans and Russians did to them!

You seem unhinged R7. Clearly there is little use in attempting to converse with someone like you. Have a lovely Sunday. You seem to need one.

Or that should be R1, R3, & R5-R8. Did you not get any sleep overnight?

How about Auschwitz 1945? Sorry, it's not in color.

There will always be hordes who will belittle and trivialize the extermination of the Jews. Reduce the worst event in human history to bad people doing bad things to each other in that one genocide is much like another kind of way. And like the Germans and the Poles, protest "but . . . but . . .we were victims, too", of course ignoring that they were ALL complicit, all enablers and assistants to Hitler and the Nazis in the extermination of the Jews of Europe.
It might help to remember that Jew hatred in Europe is as vicious and active today as it was in 1945 (and 1845 and 1545 and 1245). It might also help to remember that in Poland, which gleefully built extermination factories and enthusiastically murdered Jews, reminding the Poles of their horrific crimes against Jews is illegal.

The Daily Mail often posts on precisely this topic. They can’t get enough of WW2 and its aftermath. It appeals to the kind of readers who worship Churchill and who yearn for the UK to return to being a leading power. The Platinum Jubilee is going to give them all orgasms.

R7, here's something for you to masturbate to for a few days.

R16 obviously has a reading comprehension problem.

Guess what, R15?!? This thread isn't about anything other than Germans trying to play the victim after they raped half the civilized world. Your "what about" distraction techniques won't work here.
Try again.

R13 obviously has a basic cognition problem. Plus, he's a neo-nazi.

Given that the war marked the death knell of their empire (and they could not have won without others coming in and doing the heavy lifting), I doubt this is the reason for their sentimentalism.

Meanwhile at this time Russian military were committing mass rape of German females from children to old women. Marlene Dietrich in a film set in Berlin just after WWII ended quipped "do you know what it was like to be a woman in Berlin after the Russians arrived...". And she was quite correct.
For the record basically all military stationed in Berlin or other parts of Germany were at it as well; American, British, etc.. It is mainly the Russians who history knows of because of the huge scale of their crimes. When the Russians weren't raping they were looting Berlin or any other area stationed.
There too American military weren't all exactly innocents...

r13, Not to turn this into a pissing contest, but your hyperbole is quite disrespectful to me and to history. And to other people's histories that were actually worse than the nazi holocaust.
Below is is just the number of dead black slaves tossed overboard on the journey over the sea... People dying from the whatever disease they got from the man who'd been dead next to them for a week. I think I'd rather a gas chamber or a bullet to the head than a torturous slow death for months at sea. Not to mention the 100s of millions who lived IN slavery for 400 years.
"Estimates of how many blacks were lost at sea in the roughly 400 years of the slave trade in the Americas vary wildly. Some, like Mr. Akeem, place the figure between 100 million and 200 million. Others say perhaps as many as 14 million people perished. Whichever is true, many historians note that the numbers of enslaved Africans who died at sea were so great that sharks learned to follow the slave routes because they fed on the bodies thrown overboard."
Slavery was a holocaust at sea for hundreds of years with conservative estimates of deaths being more than twice as much as the nazi holocaust.

Europe has the Jews, America the coloureds; neither is ever going to forget and will continue brooding on their wrongs until end of time.

R25 But that's exactly what you and other deplorably ignorant about the Holocaust are doing. Your hyperbolic post simply highlights your appalling need to diminish the extermination of human beings, in this case, Jews. As if genocide "wasn't all that bad and there is actually worse". To say nothing of the 1,700 years of discrimination, persecution and butchering the Jews suffer and continue to suffer, including from the black community.
So yes, your stupidity has turned the genocide of the Jews into a "pissing contest" And you should be ASHAMED!
| by Anonymous | reply 28 | February 6, 2022 2:06 PM |
No one is diminishing anything r28. I am just point out the appropriate way to discuss atrocities without the need of saying a particular one was the worst the world has ever seen. I am black and even I would never discuss slavery as the absolute worst thing in human history. It was horrific enough, and understood to be so, without having the need to address it as so.
And I am not ashamed. And you telling me I should be is just silly.

I do so appreciate being schooled in the "appropriate way" to discuss the extermination of human beings. By someone who has asserted that "there are actually worse than the nazi holocaust".
Just when I thought your post at R25 was deplorable, you post at R29 to illustrate that I ain't seen nothing yet!

It's amazing how an innocent thread on what Berlin looked like at the end of WWII, that I thought would interest people, has turned into a complete anti-German brouhaha, started by one lunatic R1 who can't move on from what happened over 75 years ago.
THIS IS WHY WE CAN'T HAVE NICE THINGS!!

OP History is important. Thank you for sharing that video. [Fascinating how East Berlin already had an homage to Stalin.]

You're very welcome R33. Glad to see someone with the maturity to see that video for what it is, a piece of history that should not be lost.
| by Anonymous | reply 34 | February 6, 2022 2:48 PM |
Plenty of people still HATE Germany's guts. In the 1990's I was at a party my friends were giving in Brooklyn. Their upstairs neighbor was German. The were friends with a married couple. She was American and he was Dutch. When he arrived for the party he went up to the German guy, put his arm on his shoulder and said- Don't worry I don't HATE you because you're German. These were people who were born twenty years after the end of WW2.
| by Anonymous | reply 35 | February 6, 2022 2:59 PM |
Kudos to you r31, you got me. I feel right into your baited trap.
And yes, thank you OP. I always love seeing how similar or dissimilar people look in a given time period. It's even more haunting to think that everyone in the video, with the exception of a very few of the kids, are probably all dead. It just reminds you that no matter what you escape, experience in life, no one makes it out alive.
