They don't make Dexatrim anymore (I remember seeing TV commercials for it all the time as a kid). What are some good alternatives?

The prescription appetite suppressants are considerably safer than the over-the-counter ones like Dexatrim (now removed from the market).

Plus they're prescribed sparingly and you're under a doctor's care the whole time. You normally only get 3-4 weeks worth at a time in order to judge your progress, monitor your blood pressure, etc.

I take medication for my Adult ADD and some of those medications work pretty well as an appetite suppressant, especially the extended release versions. Ritalin ER and Adderall ER both suppress my appetite. Unfortunately the effect kinds of wears off over time. By that I mean, that after a while, I don't really get the all day, forget-to-eat that I get when I first start taking them.

For some reason, the combination of Prozac and Ritalin or Adderall works even better for me and really intensifies the weight loss. Not only does it suppress my appetite but it speeds up my metabolism (or something) and I almost always drop 10 or 15 lbs without even trying. Unfortunately, the effect wears off after about six months to a year.

I have to cycle off Prozac after a couple of years (Prozac poops out for many people at around 2 years or so). But when I start back on the Prozac with the ADD drug, the weight-loss effective is wonderful again. For now, I'm on another anti-depressant . I'm always eager to go back on the Prozac, because I love that initial weight-loss.

A doctor once gave me Provigil, which is primarily a drug used to treat sleep disorders such as Narcolepsy, for my ADD. I loved that drug - it's the only drug (other than Prozac) that really helped with my depression and caused me to lose weight without trying.

Unfortunately, after a period of allowing Provigil to be used off-label for ADD and other disorders, the FDA changed their recommendations. And doctors (at least the doctors I've seen) seem reluctant to prescribe Provigil for any off-label uses. Too bad, I loved that drug - and no side effects at all that I was aware of.

I was on Topomax for a couple of years and lost a ton of weight. It was prescribed for depression but I think it is also used with migraines. Lost its effectiveness for depression over time but really effective with weight loss. A major side effect for some is that it changes your taste buds - I had to give up diet coke.

Avoid anything with wheat in it. You'll go HOURS without feeling hungry and practically have to force yourself to eat something just because so much time has gone by.

R2, that’s not accurate. Those “weight loss clinics” are pretty much just legal drug dealers. I used to go in and get six weeks worth of phentermine at a time. I told them I didn’t want the weekly check-ups nor the weekly B12 shots, just the meds, and they were okay with that. Once I got my BMI down to about 17, I obviously wasn’t using them for weight control, but they happily refilled my prescription. They were expensive, though ($300 for six weeks vs. the $12 a legit prescription would cost to fill at a pharmacy.)

Fiber supplement. Chances are you aren't getting enough in your diet anyway so it is extra beneficial. I take it about an hour before a meal and it really does fill you up and you will eat less. Ease into it though, start off with half the recommended dose before each meal or you will end up with a stomach ache and probably explosive diareah. After a week or so you will be used to it and can tolerate the full dose.

R6 I have prescribed Provigil for ADHD. However, over the past 5 years or so, insurances won’t pay for it and it is quite expensive..

R7 Topomax’s nickname is “Dopamax” - most people experience some brain fog/dopiness on it. Hence its usefulness is quite limited.

Certain antidepressants will make you drop weight.

Effexor (venlafaxine) pulled me out of.a suicidal depression *and* took away my appetite. I lost 20 pounds in a couple of months.

R21, no, GBH is a depressant. Provigil is more of a stimulant. It’s not high inducing, but it will keep you awake.

OP the minute that you wake up, go to the kitchen and make a cup of instant coffee - four teaspoons per cup. I hate the taste so I throw in some ice cubes and when they’re melted i neck it. Follow this up with a berocca in a glass of chilled water.

I do this every day and I don’t even want to think of food until mid afternoon. And that includes having hit the gym for 90 minutes at lunchtime.

It may not work for everyone but it works for me.
