Any tips for aging dry skin?

Writer Harper Scott

I’m in my late 30’s and all of the sudden my skin is just falling apart. It’s so dry and crackly suddenly. Any tips?

by Anonymousreply 126July 5, 2021 11:11 PM

Before you go to bed, draw yourself a bath and add a squirt or two of baby oil. After soaking in it for a bit, pat yourself dry and then put on some cotton pajamas. You’re skin will be nice and soft on the morrow.

by Anonymousreply 1July 3, 2021 4:36 PM

I mean, where is your dry skin?

by Anonymousreply 4July 3, 2021 4:38 PM

Check your diet. Eat salmon, sardines, mackerel, nuts, seeds, fresh vegetables.

by Anonymousreply 5July 3, 2021 4:38 PM

I'm in my late 50s and have no dry and crackly skin problems. Stop the drinking and drugs, OP.

by Anonymousreply 6July 3, 2021 4:40 PM

Baby oil is mineral oil - toxic. Use natural bath salts and oils for body. For face, high-quality products with hyaluronic acid and copper peptides. Non-comedogenic sunblock, stay out of the sun and stop smoking.

by Anonymousreply 7July 3, 2021 4:42 PM

Exactly R3 - where is it on your body that is dry and cracking? Feet and hands? For those who have really cracked feet, especially on the heels and on the hands is typically dietary. See R5. This is often due to eating a lot of processed foods and interestingly, it can do with gut health and funguses.

Try Aveeno lotions, but lotion is so specific that you need to find what works for your skin type. For face, always wear a lotion with sunblock during the day and face lotion at night before bed. This is staying young 101 and what has kept me looking practically fetal at 40. If it becomes out of control or painful, see your MD.

by Anonymousreply 8July 3, 2021 4:43 PM

R1's advice means you'll really be able to sleep after you exhaust yourself every night having to clean the oil slick left behind so you don't crack your skull stepping in for just a quick shower.

by Anonymousreply 9July 3, 2021 4:50 PM

I found some good product recommendations on Reddit skin threads. You can post a photo of your problem areas plus age and people will advise you what to use. I use face creams, lotion and vitamin E oil, etc day and night on my face. Buy some coconut oil for body?

by Anonymousreply 11July 3, 2021 4:53 PM

I hope this doesn’t happen to me when I reach your age!

by Anonymousreply 13July 3, 2021 5:10 PM

Dry skin tends to age on it's own, you do not need to age it OP.

by Anonymousreply 14July 3, 2021 5:12 PM

Skip the baby oil. The whole baby is the way to go. Poach or steam lightly.

by Anonymousreply 15July 3, 2021 5:13 PM

r12 is right. People don't realize how important water is and all the benefits derived from it.

by Anonymousreply 16July 3, 2021 5:14 PM

My dermatologist recommend Cetaphil.

by Anonymousreply 17July 3, 2021 5:15 PM

I assume you're using a good moisturizer (not the cheap, petroleum-based garbage you find in the drug store) and a Vitamin C serum every day? You should also exfoliate once or twice a week, but no more frequently than that.

by Anonymousreply 18July 3, 2021 5:19 PM

Apply your moisturizer to DAMP skin.

Baby oil is awful. It's messy and clogs your pores. If you have really thick, dark skin, I could see it working. I know black people who will use baby oil or thicker, more oiler creams like Cocoa Butter. It really depends on your skin type and finding the right products.

[quote] use a health food store moisturizer with oils and other humectants.

What do you suggest in particular? Health food as in Whole Foods?

by Anonymousreply 25July 3, 2021 5:37 PM

I age my cabinets using a nice chestnut stain. I don't know how well itwill work on skin.

by Anonymousreply 26July 3, 2021 5:38 PM

Two tablespoons of olive oil twice a day. Up fish oils and take a supplement with high EPA/DHA. Eat fatty fish as stated above . This is key. Will also decrease inflammation and help your arteries. Best to start to hydrate from within. Eucerin makes an amazing moisturiser with emollients like urea. It’s called Advanced Repair and comes in a huge tub. Apply to damp skin. Any moisturizer you apply make sure to apply to damp skin always so it can lock the water in. Depending on how sensitive your skin is lactic acid is also very hydrating and exfoliating too. A good moisturiser with it in it is called LacHydrin or AmLactin. Some of these work on the face but again depends on your sensitivity. A safe bet for your face is Cerave. They make some great creams that hydrate and are cheap. Don’t wash with soap. Get a CeraVe hydrating cleanser or if your are really bad off, use Cetaphil. What you never want to do is disrupt your natural moisture barrier. We tend to over cleanse as a society and use too many harsh chemicals which disrupt the skin’s natural environment. It’s the biggest organ in the body. Best of luck.

by Anonymousreply 27July 3, 2021 5:39 PM

Every evening sleep face down in a tub full of lukewarm water. You'll never worry about dry skin again!

by Anonymousreply 28July 3, 2021 5:40 PM

[quote]You can post a photo of your problem areas plus age and people will advise you

It wouldn't work. I'm 62 but everyone mistakes me for 32, so they'd just give me compliments instead of dry skin advice.

by Anonymousreply 30July 3, 2021 5:43 PM

[quote] exfoliate

Do this minimally and do not use St. Yves products. I think Kiehl's is a solid, mid level, affordable skin care line that works well without being over the top.

by Anonymousreply 31July 3, 2021 5:43 PM

Try grease and some matches, OP.

by Anonymousreply 32July 3, 2021 7:42 PM

Sorry, I should have been more clear. It’s my face that’s the issue.

by Anonymousreply 34July 3, 2021 11:57 PM

Have you switched to a different face wash? That can cause excessive dry skin.

by Anonymousreply 35July 4, 2021 4:10 AM

When I started using African black soap to wash my face it made a huge difference.

by Anonymousreply 36July 4, 2021 4:11 AM

Manuka honey skin mask once a week.

by Anonymousreply 37July 4, 2021 4:51 AM

I live in a dry climate, and my skin tends to dry out. After I shower, I spritz my face with rose water, and then apply a small amount of Egyptian Magic all over my face (except my nose.)

I use Everyday Shea everywhere else, I have a wand with a hard sponge on the end to apply to my back. I use a terracotta "pumice stone"on my heels in the shower every day, and moisturize my feet as well.

Hydrating from the inside is important as well, so I drink a lot of water. I generally have tea in the morning, but come afternoon it is water for the rest of the day.

Shea and cocoa butter tend to work best on my skin. Coconut oil tends to be mentioned as the end all be all, but coconut oil tends to work best on oily skin. It dries me out, so I avoid it.

by Anonymousreply 38July 4, 2021 5:00 AM

Same process as aging cheese, or salami...keep in a cool, dark, slightly humid environment.

Face or body, get a good moisturizer. CeraVe or Eucerin are great drugstore brands that have effective, no-frills formulations. If you want to spend a little more money for a facial moisturizer (which I think is reasonable—not so much worth it for body lotion), I like Kiehl's facial cream. I use that at night, and during the day use Eucerin's SPF face lotion. Sunscreen is probably more important than a moisturizer alone for keeping your skin from aging. I have worn sunscreen regularly since I was in my early 20s; I am now in my early 30s, and I look much younger than I am. I do have the benefit of having good genetics when it comes to skin (my great-grandmother looked like she was 60 when she was in her 80s, and both my parents look younger than they are), but I still think regular sunscreen use has saved me from a lot of damage.

by Anonymousreply 42July 4, 2021 6:10 AM

La Roche-Posay Toleriane Sensitive Riche

by Anonymousreply 43July 4, 2021 6:14 AM

My friend said to be VERY careful with sunscreens made for Asians, which I heard is the best moisturizing formula with sunblock. This is for day cream. Apparently they can have bleaching creams in them which can be harmful, so read the labels!!!!!

by Anonymousreply 44July 4, 2021 6:17 AM

Everything I was going to suggest has been mentioned above: Lots of water to stay hydrated, lots of healthy fats in your diet (fish, fish oil, olives, olive oil, raw nuts, avacado, all in moderation since they are calorie dense), very little sun but some sun (early morning and late afternoon is best). Good moisturizers help and they don't have to be expensive; chain drugstore versions of Eucerin and Neutrogena are fine.

Also, I don't believe anyone has mentioned bathing. No long hot showers or baths everyday. I was having all kinds of skin problems and an older dermatologist immediately asked me about my bathing habits. He told me to stop taking long hot daily showers and instead take short lukewarm showers only every 2nd or 3rd day and just wash up at the sink in between. He also said to just lather up my pits, crotch, ass and feet. All kinds of problems I was having, including rashes, dry skin, itching, etc. started clearing up immediately. He said other people can take long hot showers but my skin was just too delicate.

Yes, a Jizz Facial? I try to get them as often as posible. It also works for black head removal.

Yes, but by the time you get all the black heads completely out, the steel wool has started to hurt.

[quote]For those who have really cracked feet, especially on the heels and on the hands is typically dietary.

Not really, it has to do with blood circulation. If you have a desk job and dont move around a lot this is a common problem especially in cold or dry weather. If you do cardo or jog every day to the point where your feet sweat, the problem will solve itself over time. Also, a magic cure I got from a podiatrist once was some stuff galled BagBalm. It's super cheap you can get it at any drug store. It smells terrible and looks like vaseline but it's not and it works within days. Apply it overnight then put on some sock. It was originally invented for cow udders LOL.

by Anonymousreply 50July 4, 2021 8:41 AM

R45 Yes, I do take long hot showers! I’ve started wondering if maybe that might be bad for me. I guess I’ll start taking lukewarm showers even though I hate them.😒

by Anonymousreply 51July 4, 2021 8:47 AM

I’ve read lots of positive things about Cera’Ve Hydrating Cleanser. Maybe I’ll give that a shot.

by Anonymousreply 52July 4, 2021 8:48 AM

Do you think washcloths are bad for the face? I’ve always used a washcloth but I’m starting to wonder if that’s starting to contribute to my dry skin issues too.

by Anonymousreply 53July 4, 2021 8:49 AM

R50 Thanks I'm gonna try that BagBalm you recommended.

I can get it here in the UK. We must have a load of farmers that use it! Lol

If you're looking for something under the eye, I really like Neutrogena Healthy Skin Anti-Wrinkle Eye Cream. It absorbs quickly so if I absolutely have to use it before I go out for the day, I don't look like I have moisturizer on.

If you have dry spots on the body, Amlactin Ultra Soothing lotion will do the trick. I had some dry spots on my right elbow for years and nothing took care of them, one use of Amlactin and it went away. I still use it twice a week before bed to keep the spots at bay.

by Anonymousreply 61July 4, 2021 11:11 AM

recently the govt came out with a report that many make up items have toxins in them that causes cancer and they aren't even listed on the label. You have to be careful with products. I would go with brands that are more healthy, no fragrance etc.

Virginal twink cum is available only from Goop, at premium prices.

by Anonymousreply 63July 4, 2021 4:44 PM

Skin care and diet are so linked. If anyone has bumpy keratosis, removal of dairy clears it up. The American diet is not good for us. I'm not just saying for the fat whore but our food are processed and pumped full of chemicals. Start eating clean by 35. Diet soda is garbage. Drink water infused with natural lemon or mint, take a steam 3x a week, always wear sunglasses, take a probiotic, and you will see your skin improve. Fragrance free everything is good as well. Start with your soaps and moisturizes. You also want to make sure your anal walls stay hydrated and supple.

by Anonymousreply 64July 4, 2021 4:48 PM

CeraVe. End of discussion.

by Anonymousreply 65July 4, 2021 4:56 PM

CeraVe changed their formula around 2012. It's not the same product other wise I would agree.

by Anonymousreply 66July 4, 2021 4:59 PM

[Quote] You also want to make sure your anal walls stay hydrated and supple.

How do I do this? Asking for a friend.

by Anonymousreply 67July 4, 2021 5:01 PM

R67 - Drink lots of water, cut alcohol to a minimum, buy lubricants with hydrating emollients (see GOOPs suggestions for anal sex health), make sure you eat fiber, and take a probiotic.

I had perfect skin up until my 30s and then I have no idea what happened. I use Paula's Choice 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliant to help and it's great.

Stop consuming alcohol, chase all caffeinated drinks with a lot of water, drink water, use cleansing oils instead of soap with detergents. Use olive oil or oil based moisturizers especially in the drying months of Winter. Some good ones are made by MDNA Skin, Olivella and The Body Shop.

Use Egyptian Magic all over your face and neck before going to sleep once a week too.

by Anonymousreply 75July 4, 2021 7:08 PM

[quote] Do you think washcloths are bad for the face? I’ve always used a washcloth but I’m starting to wonder if that’s starting to contribute to my dry skin issues too.

I would skip the washcloths and just use your hands.

OP, is it possible you have an allergy? That might be causing dryness / itching to your face.

Also, people on DL get mad when I post this, but Vaseline works for me.

I also use Aveeno body wash.

Drink more water, less caffeine and alcohol.

by Anonymousreply 79July 4, 2021 8:01 PM

What do you all think about those mini face rollers that SUPPOSEDLY help make more collagen? Does it really work or is it a crock of shit? I would think rolling something all over your face would create more lines and sagging but I could be wrong.

Oh for fucks sake, I wish people would stop saying this. If you live in America, your healthy clean diet is an American diet. Not everyone in the US eats sticks of fried butter. Lots of Americans skip eating processed foods.

[quote] If you mean keratosis pilaris, there is no actual cure including diet. You can improve it, but nothing will actually get rid of it because it's genetic.

I do. This is true. Both a friend and I have noticed a huge difference. The more that is coming out, the more it is showing that cow's milk might not be ideal for humans. I still do dairy, but I have notice a massive difference. I have a worked out body, so after all the effort to have keratosis pillars, it was worth experimenting with diet.

Everyone should drink 1-2 large glasses or water in the morning, make sure you shit daily, and have a good sweat everyday. You need to detoxify daily and elimination is the way to clearer everything.

by Anonymousreply 87July 4, 2021 11:27 PM

R87, I agree that dairy in general is very bad for you (and I say that as someone addicted to cheese and heavy cream in my coffee), but everything I've read regarding pilaris states that certain people are predisposed for the condition and the best you can do is improve it a bit, but you can't entirely eliminate it.

If you've had success, that's great. What exactly did you do besides cut down on dairy? Do you use a particular exfoliating scrub?

by Anonymousreply 88July 4, 2021 11:56 PM

No scrubs, R88. The diet and then I would say using plain dial soap with a basic Aveeno body lotion after. Keep it clean and then moisturized. I have read links between KP and fungus, which is why I am focusing on gut health. If you have tough skin that can take hardcore treatments and you don't want to bother with dietary, Differen Gel which is now OTC for the last few years works. My demo recommended it and pre-OTC it was like $250 w/ good insurance. Now it's about 30/tube.

I think I may have to just go cold turkey on dairy, too.

by Anonymousreply 92July 5, 2021 12:33 AM

I have keratosis pilaris. Eliminating dairy didn't help at all. What did help was dry brushing my skin daily before my shower, and moisturizing daily after. I use Everyday Shea.

My arms (that is where it was worst) are mostly smooth now. If I do have a localized outbreak, the best option is to leave it alone, continue my daily routing, and don't pick at it .

by Anonymousreply 93July 5, 2021 12:47 AM

You dry brushed every day? It didn't irritate your skin?

by Anonymousreply 94July 5, 2021 1:13 AM

A Swiss cosmetic surgeon in Geneva (surgeon to the stars) recommends Acerbine diluted with rose water (decreasing the rose water over time as the skin becomes accustomed to the Acerbine). In the evening follow with Retin A.

My glamour lesbian sister does this and her skin is beautiful. This really works and Acerbine is inexpensive. One has to order from a European pharmacy.

I tried it but because I shave the sting was intolerable.

by Anonymousreply 95July 5, 2021 1:21 AM

Never heard of acerbine. Do you spray it on your face or apply it like a toner?

by Anonymousreply 96July 5, 2021 1:25 AM

Like a toner with a cotton pad. The rose water is important as well.

by Anonymousreply 97July 5, 2021 1:29 AM

What body lotion do you recommend for dry skin. My face is oily but legs and arms are dry and itchy at times.

by Anonymousreply 98July 5, 2021 1:32 AM

I use argan oil or coconut oil after a shower. It leaves a nice sheen on the skin and smells great.

by Anonymousreply 99July 5, 2021 1:43 AM

I was referred to someone named Lisle. She sold me an expensive potion that promises eternal life and an everlasting youthful appearance.

by Anonymousreply 100July 5, 2021 1:45 AM

At night use a good moisturizer and then put a very thin layer of aquaphor over it. The technique is called slugging. But if you're only 30 and your skin has just dried out you should get some tests done. Especially if the skin around your ankles is drying out

by Anonymousreply 101July 5, 2021 1:50 AM

I started using Hyaluronic Acid/ Vitamin C serum and a good face oil at night. Drunk Elephant has a nice one, but there are more affordable options. No shame. Skin looks/ feels great.

by Anonymousreply 102July 5, 2021 1:53 AM

The good stuff you apply to your skin isn't nearly as good as the healthy stuff you take into your body which comes out through the skin. Eat a good diet and stay hydrated.

by Anonymousreply 103July 5, 2021 2:04 AM

Does drinking 2 cups of coffee a day dry out skin?

by Anonymousreply 104July 5, 2021 2:27 AM

R94, I do dry brush every day. I use a medium/soft boar bristle brush and it does not irritate my skin. Stiffer brushes would, absolutely. I use a stiffer Tampico brush my heels and the soles of my feet when dry brushing. That would irritate my skin if I used it anywhere else.

I also use a medium/stiff hairbrush every day before I shower to exfoliate my scalp, but I use a much softer brush when actually brushing/styling my hair after.

by Anonymousreply 105July 5, 2021 2:34 AM

[quote]Does drinking 2 cups of coffee a day dry out skin?

To the contrary, coffee is over 95% water, so it helps keep you hydrated. On the other hand, an excess of of coffee and caffeine cause problems of their own.

by Anonymousreply 106July 5, 2021 2:59 AM

Coffee is a diuretic, though.

by Anonymousreply 108July 5, 2021 3:52 AM

I age my dry skin by hanging upside-down in a pork smoker for 45 minutes each day.

by Anonymousreply 109July 5, 2021 4:24 AM

[quote]Coffee is a diuretic, though.

But 2 cups, which is what was asked about, shouldn't strain an otherwise healthy system.

by Anonymousreply 111July 5, 2021 4:29 AM

Use CeraVe cream during the day, The Ordinary night cream at night. Both are very moisturizing and affordable.

For a splurge, get Shu Uemera cleansing oil. Use this at night in your cleansing routine.

by Anonymousreply 112July 5, 2021 4:36 AM

Oh and avoid sugar. It’s very aging for skin.

by Anonymousreply 113July 5, 2021 4:38 AM

Is emu oil as good of a moisturizer as Cera’Ve or the other clinical moisturizers or no?

by Anonymousreply 114July 5, 2021 5:02 AM

R115 Why don’t you demonstrate for us.

by Anonymousreply 116July 5, 2021 5:06 AM

I can't get over the number of Dlers who use pure oil after a shower or as a moisturizer. Doesn't that get everywhere? Doesn't it stain clothing and sheets?

by Anonymousreply 117July 5, 2021 6:05 AM

why dry brushing and not wet brushing ( water)?

by Anonymousreply 118July 5, 2021 7:25 AM

Bukkakke ruined my carpet R117

by Anonymousreply 119July 5, 2021 10:42 AM

I'm 42 and have nice young looking skin. For now anyway. I don't smoke but I do drink and exercise regularly. My current routine is that I splash my face with filtered water, pat dry, and apply a Vitamin C cleansing paste (Derma-E), wash off, use Derma-E eye cream, The Ordinary caffeine solution for puffiness, and then slather CeraVe facial moisturizing lotion SPF 30 (I break out from moisturizer so I use face lotion). I try to re-apply the lotion a few times a day. I use CeraVe PM lotion at night. Sometimes some other misc face masks or creams throughout the week.

by Anonymousreply 120July 5, 2021 4:49 PM

Sorry, my face is still wet when i apply the Vitamin C paste ^ and, this is affordable for me as R112 stated - I don't think I would spend over $20 on a single product.

by Anonymousreply 122July 5, 2021 4:55 PM

[quote] why dry brushing and not wet brushing ( water)?

There was a book that came out in the '60s or '70s that recommended dry brushing. I think people are just following that old remedy without reevaluating it.

Wet brushing (exfoliating and washing away dead skin at the same time) makes more sense to me.

I have found that dry brushing works better for me to exfoliate than wet brushing, at least in terms of keeping my KP under control.

Dry brushing is supposed to help with lymphatic drainage.

Dry brushing makes the most sense since it stimulates blood flow. More so than any cream or diet.
