5-part Showtime series "Outcry"
Andrew Hansen
Anyone else watch this? It chronicles the 2013 conviction of then 17 year-old Greg Kelley for charges of sexual abuse against two four year old boys and the events that followed up until now. He was later exonerated, but the whole case was just one big clusterfuck of corruption and incompetence.

He's cute! What happened to him?

I watched the first episode, which I think is all that is available. I figured he would be exonerated; otherwise, what would be the point of the story? In its specific story of justice gone wrong, I think it demonstrates that the legal system often -- I mean, very often -- doesn't work in this country. Crooked cops, cops who just want to get cases off the books, inept defense attorneys, DAs who value easy wins over justice ... and they system's complete disregard for the victims of their perfidy.

^Very true.
R1, in 2013 Kelley was convicted of molesting two little boys. The documentary is graphic in its detailing of what happened to the boys, but Kelley did not do it. The incidents took place at the home of his lookalike friend Jonathan McCarty. McCarty's parents ran a day care center out of their home, where Kelley happened to stay for a period of time. One little boy made an outcry that Kelley molested him around the date of July 12, 2013, and Kelley was arrested the following month and would go on to serve three years in prison before being let out on bond in 2017. The documentary is detailed about the corruption and ineptitude of the town's justice system, showing the first DA assigned to the case who wanted to prosecute Greg to make an even bigger name for herself (she is now dead from suicide), to the county prosecutor who changed the date that the incident happened on documents in order to secure a conviction (Kelley had moved out of the house the month prior to the incident) to the apathetic police chief and the lead detective, who completely botched the initial investigation, to Kelley's first defense attorney who later threw him under the bus when she was accused of deprivation of due process and ineffective assistance because she had a prior relationship with the McCartys, to the crooked Texas ranger who seemed to have a personal grudge against Kelley. From 2017 to 2019, Kelley was pretty much living with the possibility of going back to prison if the Court of Criminal Appeals decided that he did not prove his innocence, but he was exonerated by the CCA in November of 2019. The sleazy lookalike friend Jonathan McCarty was even named by one of the children during the initial investigation, but the lead detective never interviewed him nor did he do a search of the house. McCarty would later be imprisoned for violation of probation of a drug charge and, even later for the rape of a 15 year old girl, which happened while Kelley was in prison. The cops even found pictures of naked kids on McCarty's phone and computer, but because the detective failed to interview him and name him as a suspect in the Kelley case, he was never tried. He was let out of prison earlier this year and doesn't even have to register as a sex offender.

Strangely constructed show. Greg is dreamy.

Hot! I wish he had molested me.

R5 You sound incredibly normal and well-adjusted.

I just finished bingeing the series, which was very well done. The incompetence of the police was stunning.

The real culprit was the Jonathan's mother. I am sure she knew and she also got that incompetent lawyer that really screwed him by not bringing evidence about Jonathan.

r8 is one of those misogynists who blame women for everything

What channel is Showtime on?
| by Anonymous | reply 11 | July 19, 2020 12:57 AM |
R10 I am not but the lawyer deliberately failed to do her job.
| by Anonymous | reply 12 | July 19, 2020 7:15 PM |
Then why refer to the mother as "the real culprit" when she isn't?

WHET "Bear the Dog?" Was he exonerated, too?

From the documentary, it is pretty clear that she might have known what actually happened and did not come through (understandable, but...)

"Outcry"'s real theme is that even bad cops get away with it because they have the safety net of the judges, too powerful DAs, and criminal defense lawyers who are ethically challenged. The best part of the series is when the real guilty guy gets a call from his friend at jail.

You can watch the whole series on Amazon Prime.

SPOILER ALERT
The sad thing is he was an NFL prospect and now that he’s been exonerated and given a scholarship to play at UT, nobody can play football.

I seriously doubt he was an "NFL prospect" - being a good high school football player doesn't mean you're going to make it in the NFL

Do they go into his prison time? I hear it's not so pleasant for convicted child molesters.
| by Anonymous | reply 20 | July 19, 2020 10:53 PM |
R20, yes, there was a re-enactment of his rape in the prison shower.
| by Anonymous | reply 21 | July 19, 2020 10:56 PM |
I think you can also watch the whole series now on the Showtime app.

There’s one part where he’s having dinner with his mother and telling her what a nightmare jail was, and that there were times that he had to defend himself because inmates don’t take it easy on guys who come in for child molestation. It’s a heartbreaking scene.

So he was turned out. Thank you guys.
